NATIONAL DAY

OF PRAYER

WHAT IS THE NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER?

In April, 1952, several members of Congress made a request to then-President Harry S. Truman that requested that he and all future presidents should

"...set aside and proclaim a suitable day each year, other than a Sunday, as a National Day of Prayer,

on which the people of the United States may turn to God in prayer and meditation at churches, in groups, and as individuals."

However, not until May 5, 1988, under President Ronald Regan, did it become law (P.L. 100-307) for the President of the United States to intentionally set aside a day for the nation to pray.

In no way are the people of the nation required to pray; rather, this is a day where people - and the Church, in particular - are asked to come together to pray for their towns, cities, businesses, schools, government leaders, military, media, and families.

In 1998, President Bill Clinton set aside the First Thursday in May of each year as the designated day that the National Day of Prayer would take place.

In 2024, this date is Thursday, May 2, 2024.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN SPRINGFIELD ON THE NDP?

TOGETHER, WE'LL LIFT UP JESUS AND OUR CITY.

Thursday, May 2 at 7am at the LaQuinta Inn & Suites in downtown Springfield, we plan to share a meal, sing some songs, and pray for our city.

We'll also hear from Dean Trune, Director of Healthy Churches Network (Phoenix, AZ), who will lead us through a time of guided prayer.

We'll be joined by followers of Jesus from across the greater Springfield area during the morning, and we plan to have you on your way by 8:30am.
